Individual Assignments with Weights

10%: participation

The instructor will base this grade on attendance, discussion participation, and periodic quizzes.

10%: introductory speech

A two- to three-minute speech introducing yourself or a classmate. Construct a speech that explains some aspect of your (or your classmate's) personality, background, beliefs, or aspirations. Prepare written version. Prepare notes to speak from. Speak speech in class for grade. Post full written text and self-assessment of 100 words to digital forum.

20%: informative speech with digital media

A seven-minute speech informing the audience about an object, concept, process, or event that occurs in network media. Use of a digitally projected slides is required. A typed full-sentence preparation outline of the speech, including bibliography, is due after the day the speech is delivered. The speech is to be delivered extemporaneously from a speaking outline.

20%: persuasive posting

Three 25-125 word posts made at three real online locations of the student's choosing followed by a 300-500 word post to the class forum reflecting on how the three posts were received. Did "digital deliberation" happen?

30%: persuasive video

A nine-minute speech delivered in an attempt to persuade your classmates to engage in a new online deliberative activity or to engage in online deliberative activity in a new way. This speech will require considerable research and skillful use of supporting materials. Special emphasis should be given to evidence and reasoning in constructing persuasive arguments. After downloading the video of the speech the student made in class, she or he shall shorten the video, incorporate other content, and/or otherwise alter the video to create a 2-5 minute "YouTube" quality video that makes the same argument. This video will require considerable effort in downloading the video and using resources around campus or elsewhere to edit it. The instructor is not responsibly for technical problems the students encounter. BACK UP YOUR WORK!

10%: final reflexive post

A 500 word blog entry placed into the "Final Reflections" online posting forum.

Attendance:

Full attendance is required of all students. Because discussion sections are not interchangeable, students must attend the section for which they are registered or they will not be graded and will fail the course. Because the ideas and meanings in a course such as this emerge in the interaction between the instructors and students, students missing more than 3 meetings shall not have participated at an acceptable level and may fail the course. Students not attending lectures will miss material not otherwise available and are obligated to seek out that material from classmates. To avoid duplication and reserve both office hours and class time for students attending lectures, please do not ask the instructors to recapitulate material missed or not understood as a result of not attending lectures.
