Course Objectives:
To develop the skills of communication in digital media by:
(1) exploring theories of public communication with special attention to deliberation;
(2) locating and assessing arguments in different digital media;
(3) effectively communicating assertions with evidence face-to-face,
(4) effectively communicating assertions with evidence in different digital media;
(5) preparing and revising drafts of communications;
(6) using appropriate language, grammar, spelling, and etc. in communications in different media;
(7) critically thinking and applying that thought to the analysis of communication
(8) and interrogating the implications of technology on public communication.

A : 100 - 93%
AB: 92 - 88%
B: 87 - 83%
BC: 82 - 78%
C: 77 - 70%
D: 69-60%

10%: participation
The instructor will base this grade on attendance, discussion participation, and periodic quizzes.
10%: introductory speech
A 2-3 minute "speed" speech introducing yourself or a classmate. Construct a speech that explains some aspect of your classmate's personality, background, beliefs, or aspirations. Prepare written version. Prepare notes to speak from. DO NOT READ. Leave notes with instructor. Post self assessment on course forum of 50-100 words. Post three responses of 10-25 words to three different student self-assements.
20%: descriptive speech with digital media
A 5-7 minute speech about the results of an attempt at generating public deliberation in an online forum. Before giving the speech, post at three real online locations of your choosing. In the speech, address: "digital deliberation" happen? Use of digitally projected slides including at least one "screen shot" is required. Prepare written version. Prepare notes to speak from. DO NOT READ. Leave notes with instructor include a "Works Cited" page with at least 3 citations (course readings are good) include the proper citation of any webpages or other online media. Post self assessment on course forum of 50-100 words including links to exact URLs for forum posts. Post three responses of 25-50 words to three different student self-assements.
20%: persuasive speech about a specific online location with digital media
A 5-7 minute speech informing the audience about a specific network location and encouraging them to use that digital medium in a specific way. Use of digitally projected slides is required. Prepare notes to speak from. DO NOT READ. Leave notes with instructor include the proper citation of any webpages or other online media. Post self assessment on course forum of 50-100 words including links to exact URLs for any referenced in speech. Post three responses of 10-25 words to three different student self-assements.
30%: persuasive video
After giving the persuasive speech in class, the video recording of that speech must be remixed and publicly posted online. The video must seek to persuade to a general online audience to engage in a specific digital media practice in a particular way. Special emphasis should be given to vernacular video medium in constructing the video. By the due date, post the video on YouTube. Then post a link to the video on YouTube on the course forum. After your peers have posted their videos, review them post three responses of 25-50 words to three different student videos.
10%: final reflexive forum post
A 100-200 word post in the course forum reflecting on the issues raised by teh course.
Full attendance is required of all students. Because discussion sections are not interchangeable, students must attend the section for which they are registered or they will not be graded and will fail the course. Because the ideas and meanings in a course such as this emerge in the interaction between the instructors and students, students missing more than 3 meetings shall not have participated at an acceptable level and may fail the course. Students not attending lectures will miss material not otherwise available and are obligated to seek out that material from classmates. To avoid duplication and reserve both office hours and class time for students attending lectures, please do not ask the instructors to recapitulate material missed or not understood as a result of not attending lectures.
